As a result of graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) however, after observing the liberal arts experience as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm an advocate for education that integrates study of the arts and studies of other disciplines. It's not unusual for the ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! There is no surprise that the ethnomusicology department is located at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is part of the college of letters and Science's Department of Music. The possibility of pursuing multiple areas of interest is something that I truly like. Graduate students and undergraduates (for whom I wrote three textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Exploring Music - expressing Culture Expression) I enjoy teaching. Then I will alternate between academic activities and periods of administrative duties (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 until 1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising in 1992-98 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, I am currently Chair of Department of Music).
